The Savings Institute - Groton, CT

THE SAVINGS INSTITUTE
971 POQUONNOCK ROAD
GROTON, CONN
CLOSED 2017

So here we have a bit of an oddball in the scope of retail past... This isn't 'retail' per-say, but it's pretty interesting nonetheless.

The Savings Institute is a local branch of banks in the Connecticut Area, and have since left a former location abandoned after constructing a new facility across the street. This particular location is located at 971 Poquonnock Road in Groton, CT, in the Groton Shoppers Mart. The strip mall is anchored by a Big Y Supermarket and an Ocean State Job Lot. Also in the plaza are an abandoned Movie Theater, Planet Fitness, and RadioShack, all of which you can see on our Flickr page HERE!

Besides the removal of some signage and the drive-thru ATM, not much else has been done on the property.

The Drive-Thru ATM Lane. The left lane was for exiting through traffic from the parking lot
A close-up look at the former location of the ATM
Clearly there wasn't too much work done when the Savings Institute left as they left all of their directional signs up within the parking lot.

The parking lot area was actually surprising lively considering it's for a vacant bank. A few stores from within the Shoppers Mart staked in some road signs to draw attention.

The building itself was pretty out-of-date, as it opened in the 1950s and hasn't seen too much renovation since its opening.

Look at that Savings Institute notification board!
Looking in through some more windows

Inside the entrance vestibule there was a little desk along the left wall where customers would be able to write out checks and deposit/withdrawal slips, but I wasn't able to get a good picture of it. There was a note left on it which read:

We have moved to 996 Poquonnock Road.
This Office Along With the ATM and Night Drop Have Relocated
to 996 Poquonnock Road, Which is Located Across the Street.
Come check it out.

-The Savings Institute

Odd location to leave the message if you ask me, as it was near-impossible to read. I suspect that it was meant to get taped up on the window, but they must've forgotten to put it up before they moved out. I mean it wasn't really hard to find the new building as it quite literally was directly across the street.

My favorite part about this particular abandoned location is that in front of the entrance and behind a little stone wall, there was a collection of three Savings Institute coffee mugs. Why they're there... I don't know, but it was quite the interesting find.

I might have taken two of the mugs back home with me...

Now getting back to the bank... I walked around the building counterclockwise, as that's how the traffic for the Drive-Up teller was routed.

There wasn't anything too special on the rear of the building. Just an employee entrance and some covered windows.

Looking inside the window on the employee entrance
The rear of the building still bore a large 'The Savings Institute' sign. Judging from how there was tape on it, they may have tried to cover it, but the covering has since been taken down. It still features the chain's older style logo.

Most of the signage from the drive-thru teller lane has been taken down. All that really remains is the Clearance banner and some decals on the window.

Looking out from the drive-thru lane, you can see the new building across the street

Looking inside of the front

There was also a stray shopping cart from Big Y in front of the building

So that about sums up everything leftover at the site of the old Savings Institute. Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to check out my documentation of other locations in the Groton Shoppers Mart on my Flickr page (BrandHistoryUSA)

Some Lost Carts of Yesteryear - MICRO UPDATE

Howdy everyone!

I recently returned from a trip to New York where I stopped by this abandoned Circuit City in Middletown, NY. I was looking through some pictures that I took there and found some interesting pieces that I missed while I was out, and I'm pretty mad I didn't get more of an opportunity to photograph them while I was out.

The thing that really gets me is that I almost went into the receiving bay where the carts were located, but was kind of scared to. I chickened out and figured a homeless person might live there and I didn't want to frighten them. At this point its such a cool find and know that I know what's there, I wouldn't be as reluctant (so sorry potential homeless people)

Here's the original picture where I found the carts:

The first cart that I found was an abandoned Circuit City shopping cart, which was in the new style before the chain's closure. I remember seeing this cart and thinking that it was just a misplaced Target cart, but after seeing some pictures of Circuit City carts online I knew I was mistaken. I've zoomed in the Circuit City carts (although I think it's pretty obvious which ones they are)

For reference, here's a much better picture of a regular Circuit City shopping cart.

I also found a whole bunch of old Circuit City carts just across the road at Ollie's Bargain Outlet. At first, I just presumed they were old Lowe's carts as there was a Lowe's just down the road, but after looking at some pictures of older Circuit City carts, the ones at Ollie's match perfectly!

Here's the Circuit City carts at Ollie's:

And here are some pictures of older Circuit City carts, which match the ones at Ollie's perfectly!

Perhaps Ollie's bought the carts from Circuit City as they were closing... or just assumed them maybe? I bet Circuit City left them in the store, and when Gold's Gym took over after CC's closure they sold them off to free up the space. I'm not too sure how they got to Ollie's... or even if they're from Circuit City.

I have suspicion that the carts for Northern Tool + Equipment originated from Caldor as you'll see below, but I don't have too much evidence for it.

Also hiding in plain sight is the Caldor shopping cart, but this one's a bit more tricky to see. I adjusted the picture a little bit and upped the saturation and contrast so that the 'Caldor' logo stuck out a little bit more. This cart was in REALLY bad shape, though, as it looks like just the carriage remained.

The Caldor from which this cart likely originated from was located just behind the Circuit City plaza in the Wallkill Plaza (400 Route 211, Middletown, NY), where the property now resides as a Big Lots. This is one of the newer carts, hence the newer style 1991 logo

For reference, here's a much better picture of a regular Caldor shopping cart.

Compare that Caldor cart to the Northern Tool + Equipment carts at Ollie's and let me know what you think down below

Looking through some historical Google Maps imagery, it appears that the carts have been there since around 2016... That being said, I'm pretty sure they're not going anywhere anytime soon so I'll try to make the trek back up to Middletown to get better shots because they're freakin' awesome!

[UPDATE] Oh, and to add to the burn, I think that blue shopping cart is from a Super Kmart in Middletown which closed in 2003 and is now a Burlington Coat Factory.

IF YOU'RE IN THE MIDDLETOWN, NY AREA, PLEASE GO CHECK OUT THE CIRCUIT CITY/CALDOR/KMART CARTS AND SEND ME PICTURES AND I WOULD LOVE YOU FOREVER :)

So yeah, I'm kinda bummed I missed out on such a gem

Until next time

Kroger - Brookhaven, GA (My First Kroger EVER)

KROGER SUPERMARKETS
3871 PEACHTREE ROAD
ATLANTA, GA

So just because I'm on vacation doesn't mean I'm going to stop writing articles.

This was actually my first time ever being to a Kroger, as there aren't any up where I live in New England. Going in, I kept saying it was "craw-ger" rather than "crow-ger", so needless to say, I stood out pretty badly!

Circuit City - Somerville, MA

CIRCUIT CITY
65 MYSTIC AVE
SOMERVILLE, MA
CLOSED 2007

I know it's not usual for me to post two articles in a weekend, but this one was so good I couldn't help but release it right away.

Believe it or not, this is my first time covering an old Circuit City. I was on my way home from the Boston airport and I just happened to see this gem right off of I-93, so of course I had to stop!

KMART
CRANSTON PARKADE

296 GARFIELD AVE
CRANSTON, RI
CLOSED 2017

Hey everyone! I'm back with a report on my second abandoned Kmart, which is located in the Cranston Parkade on Garfield Ave in Cranston, RI.

This particular location opened in 2001, but despite its large size, never earned the classification of 'Big Kmart'

Filene's - Crystal Mall - Waterford, CT

Former Filene's Outside Entrance
FILENE'S
CRYSTAL MALL
850 HARTFORD TPKE
WATERFORD, CONN.
CLOSED 2006

Filene's was a large retail chain in the United States based out of Boston, MA. Originally owned by Federated Department Stores, then May's Department Stores, and eventually Macy*s in 2006, the Filene's name has since been phased out and most stores converted to the Macy*s name. This particular location in the Crystal Mall in Waterford, CT was not so fortunate in receiving a Macy*s makeover, as the mall already had a Macy*s location, which was a former Jordan Marsh.

Filene's was the second store in the Crystal Mall to open, just behind Sears, in 1984. despite having two levels, two exterior entrances, and two mall entrances, the Filene's location was extremely small for the chain, having only 90,000 square feet.

In 2008, two very unusual anchors moved into the former Filene's space: Christmas Tree Shops on the first floor and Bed Bath & Beyond on the second floor.

During the 2007/2008 renovations for CTS/BBB, one of the exterior entrances was lost, which was merely a clone of the still existing one. Satellite imagery from 2005 shows the old vestibule present on the building.

The vestibule to the former entrance has since been removed, however some remnants of it can still be found. Black-colored beams remain where the vestibule once stood, and you can see a slight change in coloration of the wall where the entrance doors once were.

A picture of the secondary exterior entrance to Filene's ©The Caldor Rainbow

Notice the black beams and discoloration of the middle section of rockwork. At the top, you can see the roof still has a bit of an angle from the old entrance
There aren't too many remnants of Filene's inside of the store. The interior underwent extensive renovation for each store, so there isn't too much to cover on the inside.

Bed Bath & Beyond Interior Entrance (2nd Floor)

The Christmas Tree Shops entrance on the first floor much more closely resembles the former Filene's entrance. The wooden part of the facade has since been covered up with a new wall, but other than that, not much has changed. If you look closely on the stonework behind the Christmas Tree Shops logos, you can actually see a bit of the markings leftover from the old Filene's signage, which was on the masonry.

Compare the Christmas Tree Shops entrance to the Filene's entrance

Interestingly enough, the entrance facade for Bed Bath & Beyond had the entrance to the store pushed back 30-or-so feet, opening up this awkward sitting area.

This picture was taken on the walkway just behind the stairs in the above picture (the stairs have since been removed). The entrance to Christmas Tree Shops sits flush underneath with those pillars in the front, and the entrance for Bed Bath and Beyond was pushed back 30 or so feet from the Filene's entrance.

Sadly, pictures of Filene's from when it was still open is hard to come by, and I haven't found any pictures. If you have any, feel free to share them below in the comments!

Until next time,
