Benny's Home and Auto Stores - Norwich, CT
BENNY'S HOME AND AUTO STORES
35 NEW LONDON TNPK
NORWICH, CT
CLOSED 6 OCTOBER 2017
Welcome back to week 2 of my Benny's Home and Auto Store documentation series!
This week, we'll be taking a look at the Norwich, CT location located on New London Turnpike. The store is located directly across the street from the Norwichtown Commons (Formerly called Norwichtown Mall) which is currently anchored by a Stop and Shop and Big Lots.
I totally stumbled across this location by accident as I was up in the Norwich area for some driving classes, but seeing this Benny's store I had to stop!
Like most Benny's stores, the road sign has since been painted over. If you look closely, you can see a faint outline to where it once read 'Benny's'

Along some of the lights that line the road, banners are still visible which listed some of Benny's store departments

This location remained for the most part untouched since the chain's closure in late 2017, with the store's iconic logo remaining visible on the facade. This particular location used a distinct style of facade that most of the newer and standalone stores adopted. Personally, I love this format Benny's, and think it has the perfect mix of old-school and modern design.
Not much was done to the store's entrance vestibule. Some stickers remained on the doors, and a small note was taped on the door to inform customers that in fact, the store had closed.
This particular location did however go through the liberty of papering up each of the store's windows, so I wasn't able to get too many pictures looking inside. It looks like all that remain are fixtures awaiting to be either purchased or moved to other stores.
This location was part of a deal made to sell all but two Benny's properties to a Rhode Island-based property developer, which anticipates on renovating and repurposing the space left vacant by Benny's closure. We'll be back at some point in the future to see where things will go with the property

I went to this store when it was still open, though they had closed for the night.
ReplyDeleteNothing else to say since I never went here.
