Ad Analysis: 1970s Stop and Shop
June 25, 2018 Robby S.
Alright here's something cool that I found online: the Google Newspaper Archives. So for those of you that don't know what it is, it's a repository of online newspapers that Google has archived and are available for public viewing.
One of the newspapers that they have on file is The Day which serves my area of Southeastern Connecticut.
I thought it would be a great idea to take a look back at some of the old ads that I could find and share them on here with you guys.
The first ad of notable interest that I stumbled across was this Stop and Shop ad in the Jan 2, 1970 edition of the newspaper:
Incidentally, neither location remains a Stop and Shop at this point. The New London Stop and Shop moved down the road to its current location at 117 Boston Post Road in Waterford, CT. The former New London store has since been turned into a research laboratory for General Dynamics, who manufactures submarine vessels for the U.S. Army. The Groton store also moved in 1982, when a new Stop and Shop / Bradlee's store opened up a few miles north at 220 Route 12. After relocating, Big Y moved into the space, where it remains today.
So yeah, I don't exactly know how to end this now. Let me know what you think of these types of mini-articles, and I hope to have more coming in the near future

The first thing that I noticed was that this particular ad used the older style shopping-cart logo ad which dates back to the Stop and Shop / Bradlee's era of stores.
What I first took a look at was the store locations at the bottom of the ad, which states there are locations at 902 Bank Street in New London, CT and at 1001 Poquonnock Road in Groton, CT

Five Guys Burgers and Fries - Athens, GA
June 24, 2018 Robby S.
FIVE GUYS
198 RT 78 BUS
ATHENS, GA
CLOSED OCTOBER 2017
Hey everyone! Today's post brings us to the college town of Athens, GA, which is home to the University of Georgia. Understandably, there are many fast-food restaurants that cater to the college-age audience, and one of these restaurants was Five Guys
Five Guys abandoned this location in October of 2017 when they moved to a location 5 miles away from their former one. This location was located at the corner of College Avenue and US Bus Route 78, and currently remains empty.
Something that I found odd about this particular Five Guys location is that it did not have any illuminated sign of any kind, but rather a small label on it's awning which read 'FIVE GUYS Burgers and Fries'. A labelscar from the lettering clearly remains today.
Some residue from the window clings remain on the door, which reads 'FIVE GUYS Burgers and Fries Open 7 Days'. The store hours were listed below.

Not too much remains on the inside of the store from the Five Guys days. Just about the only thing that really hints at it being a Five Guys are some red bar stools left over in the main dining area. A note was also taped on the window which informed customers that the location had relocated.
Much like the interior, the exterior doesn't hint too much either at the location being a Five Guys. The only real giveaway is the visible labelscar on the front awning.
Well that about wraps up this week's post on Five Guys! Check back next week for another article from my stay in Georgia
Until next time

ALERT: Vacant Bradlee's Spotted
June 22, 2018 Robby S.

(to me at least)
So I have just been informed that there are two remaining Bradlee's stores left standing, but both of them are in New Jersey.
The first store I learned of is the Stratford, NJ store which is located in a shopping center located adjacent to a Goodwill store. It's located at 222 South White Horse Pike and is a converted Jefferson Ward store. From the research I've done, the space has since been occupied by other businesses, but original Bradlee's scarring remains.
It was also the site of a school bus crash a few years back, but luckily everyone was alright. I don't think the space has been occupied since then
The second, and more interesting, store that I found was located in Hazlet, NJ and is at 734 Poole Avenue and is MUCH MORE INTERESTING than the other store. First off, there still is a Bradlee's pylon sign along the roadside, which is fantastic when you consider that the store has been vacant since 2001. Also, there are MULTIPLE Bradlee's scars on the building, which are pretty freaking awesome!
The adjacent supermarket portion of the building has since been demolished but the Bradlee's space remains untouched. I called a nearby Dunkin' Donuts to make sure that the building was still in fact there before I head down there next week and while the guy working wasn't too pleased with the question, he confirmed that yes in fact the building was still there.
Anyways, if you're in the area or just want to check them out before they're demoed, DO IT ASAP!!! I don't know if/when these buildings are slated for demolition/re-purposing, but it's better to check them out now before they're gone. I'll be sure to post updates as soon as I get down to NJ to check them out
Obviously there are pictures of the building but I didn't want to spoil the fun, so I'm not going to put any pictures of the buildings on here. Check back for when I do visit the buildings, though, where you can see all of my footage from my trip
See you then!

New Stop and Shop 'Scan-It'
June 21, 2018 Robby S.
Howdy everyone,
Recently Stop and Shop has rolled out a new version of Scan-It devices, and to the best of my knowledge the Waterford store was one of the first stores to receive this updated new scanning system
Today was my first experience with the new devices, which differed significantly from the first version devices that S&S has used since 2008. For those of you that don't know, Scan-It devices are these little handheld scanners that you get as you enter a Stop and Shop or Giant supermarket. As you shop, you scan the items you select and as you shop, it will show you your total, savings, coupons, and other things of the sort.
Scan-It was Stop and Shop's second attempt at creating an interactive scanning device, with the more obscure Shopping Buddy preceding the Scan It. Contrary to Scan-It, the Shopping Buddy devices were only found at a handful of stores and were much more bulky than its streamlined successor.
Besides the upgrade from buttons to touch screen, not much else changed as far as what the device is used for. It still does the same functions of scanning, totaling, and price checking, which gen-1 handhelds did as well. The one perk that I must say, however, is that the new interface is much nicer than that of Gen 1 devices. Also, now that the scanner button is on the back of the device rather than on the front, it just feels more natural to use, which I guess is another benefit.

Right off the bat one of the biggest differences between the first and second generation scan-it device was that the newer scan-it devices adopted a new touch-screen format contrary to the older version's button-based interface. The software on the new Scan-It devices is identical the downloadable app, which enables a user's phone to function similarly to a handheld scan-it.
Another big difference is that the dock that holds the new scan-it devices (pictured at the top) is significantly smaller than the older gen-1 docking stations. Older docking stations were capable of holding 24 scan-it handhelds while the newer docks can only hold 15. Usually a store will have two docking stations; one at each entrance.

So there you have it... A review of the new Scan-It devices coming to many Stop and Shop and Giant stores. Keep an eye out for these nifty devices making their way to a store near you. Although much hasn't changed, it is nice to see the aging Gen-1 scan-its getting a bit of a face lift.

Former Stop and Shop - Westerly, RI
June 17, 2018 Robby S.
FORMER STOP AND SHOP
PRESENTLY OCEAN STATE JOB LOT
CLOSED 2008
20 POST ROAD
WESTERLY, RI
So a while ago I tried to do a post on an old Super Stop and Shop that was located in Westerly, RI but I was only able to get a few pictures of the outside of the store at the time before I got yelled at to stop taking pictures by staff. Last weekend I happened to be in the area so I decided to press my luck again and get some more shots.

June 11, 2018 Robby S.
Howdy everyone,
So thanks to a friend of mine that works over at Toys R Us, I was able to get an exclusive first-hand view of what goes on behind the scenes at the stores as business is winding down. I put together a quick video highlighting my findings, so if you're interested be sure to check it out!

Payless ShoeSource - Vernon, CT
June 10, 2018 Robby S.
PAYLESS SHOESOURCE
VERNON, CT
TRI-CITY PLAZA
35 TALCOTVILLE RD
CLOSED JULY 2017
So this week we have a bit of a shorter article for you guys.
I was up in Vernon, CT going to photograph a Kmart, and I found this empty Payless ShoeSource just down the road. It is located within the Tri-City plaza, which used to house an Ames (now Price Chopper).
Despite closing almost a year ago, a prominent labelscar is still visible on the building.
During the store's final week, Google Street View actually went by, so I have a pretty cool shot of the store before it was closing for good. Take a look at how faded the sign looks
Looking inside, you can see the place has been pretty well gutted. It was your standard Payless store in a strip mall, and never got an update with the newer-style logo. Just as a side note, I've always noticed that the Payless locations inside of larger, indoor shopping malls typically get the newer logo, and the strip mall locations never get an update.
Despite surviving Payless' initial wave of closures, which shuttered 400 stores, this store's closure was announced shortly after.
So that's this week's article on Payless ShoeSource. A bit short, I know, but stay tuned for next week's update on the Big Kmart in Vernon
Until next time

Pizza Hut - Old Saybrook, CT
June 03, 2018 Robby S.
PIZZA HUT
OLD SAYBROOK, CT
688 BOSTON POST ROAD
CLOSING DATE UNKNOWN
So this is my first post on Pizza Hut, and oh boy do I have a lot of them to talk about!
This is my (second) favorite abandoned Hut that I've visited, and totally ran into it by accident. I was driving down to Old Saybrook to photograph the old Benny's and Ames stores, and happened to run into this one on the way back.
It's your distinct, 1970s Pizza Hut, which closed sometime between 2009 and 2015. You could tell from a mile away that this once was a Pizza Hut, with its distinctive roof and window shapes.
Sadly data is hard to come by, and the best I could do is compare some old Google Street View archives which showed that it closed somewhere between those dates
Here's a picture of this particular location while it was in operation (circa 2009, ©The Caldor Rainbow)

As it sits today, the signage on the outside has been removed and the roof was repainted brown. Other than that, not much else was done to the property
Although the signage was removed outside and the roof was repainted brown, not much else was done on the inside to remove Pizza Hut's decor. Nothing has really been done to the inside since its 1975 opening.
So there you have it! An old, vintage 1970s Pizza Hut still in mint condition! I have three more Pizza Huts as of now that I plan on covering in the near future, so stay tuned for more updates in the future!
Until next time
